Rupa & the April Fishes is a SF-based global alternative band led by a young woman of Indian heritage whose nomadic upbringing and unique career as a full-time musician, social critic and physician has led her to explore issues of identity, borders, and the vagaries of life, love and death. Their third studio album BUILD [released via NatGeo on 10/2/12], called “soulful and sensuous” by Relix Magazine, broadens the reach of their characteristic sound while addressing issues such as global upheaval, the collapse of capitalism and false democracies to the rise of populist movements from Tunisia to Chile to Athens to Wall Street. Playing live to varied audiences around the world has been the best way to carry out their mandate of learning how to see what is invisible and combat widespread social demoralization, the source that feeds these songs.
Key festival performances include NY’s Central Park SummerStage, Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco’s OutsideLands and Stern Grove Festivals not to mention dozens of Europe’s most prestigious festivals and venues, including Sziget Festival and Dranouter Festival. They have worked with artists and activists such as David Graeber, Raj Patel, Rebecca Solnit, Manu Chao, Matt Mahurin and others.
